Miami Heat Likely to Acquire Kelly Oubre Jr. If Damian Lillard Trade Goes Through

Despite ongoing trade negotiations between the Miami Heat and the Portland Trail Blazers hitting a standstill, the Heat remain resolute in their pursuit of a major offseason move. Their primary target? Acquiring Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers.

However, while they pursue this blockbuster trade, another name has resurfaced in discussions to enhance their roster depth: free agent forward Kelly Oubre Jr.

After losing out on free agent center Christian Wood, who opted for the Los Angeles Lakers, NBA insider Marc Stein has reported that the Miami Heat are widely expected to sign Kelly Oubre Jr. if they successfully complete the Damian Lillard trade.

Oubre’s performance in the previous season with the Charlotte Hornets was impressive, where he averaged 20.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals while shooting 43.1 percent from the field.

Given his strong showing, it’s somewhat surprising that contending teams haven’t secured his services.

The Heat’s interest in Oubre appears contingent on their ability to land Lillard. Should the Lillard trade fall through, Miami’s depth, including talents like Tyler Herro, Nikola Jovic, and Jaime Jaquez Jr., would remain intact.

Oubre would be a valuable addition coming off the bench for the Heat, bringing a scoring-first mentality that was sometimes lacking last season outside of Herro.

Standing at 6-foot-7, he’s versatile enough to play both forward positions, offering versatility to the team. Plus, a player like Oubre could provide much-needed rest opportunities for Jimmy Butler.

Securing Kelly Oubre’s signature could significantly bolster the Heat’s depth as they acquire Damian Lillard, ultimately enhancing their chances of contending for an NBA Championship in the upcoming season.
