Report: Suns Likely to Waive E.J Liddell to Pursue Point Guard Options

The Suns are likely to waive E.J. Liddell to free up a roster spot for pursuing a point guard in free agency, according to John Gamboro of Arizona Sports.

Liddell was acquired today from the Atlanta Hawks in a minor trade that sent David Roddy to the Hawks.

Although the trade helps Phoenix save costs, as they are above the second tax apron and can’t take in more salary than they trade out, Gamboro believes the Suns are still likely to cut Liddell.

Liddell has a $2.1 million contract and a $2.3 million salary for the 2025/26 season, which includes a team option.

Liddell, a second-round pick in 2022 out of Ohio State, had only been with Atlanta since July 6. He was included in the Dejounte Murray blockbuster trade with New Orleans.

His rookie season was delayed due to a severe right knee injury in July 2022. Last season, he appeared in just eight games off the bench for New Orleans.

In the G League, he played 26 games for the Birmingham Squadron, averaging 17.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks.

If the Suns move on from Liddell, they are likely to pursue free agent guard Tyus Jones or Clippers’ Bones Hyland to fill the point guard void on their roster. Both guards are expected to be on the move this offseason.
