It makes sense for the Sixers to keep Harrell on the roster due to his contract’s potential trade value, even though his recent injury during offseason workouts might have marked his last game with the franchise.

Despite the torn ACL and medial meniscus tear in his right knee, the organization intends to retain him on the roster.

Typically, an ACL tear recovery takes around eight to nine months, with some individuals returning within six months. Harrell’s one-year, $2.89 million contract extension was signed on July 17 to stay with the Sixers. The NBA season is scheduled to start on Oct. 24 and finish on April 14, 2024.

Given the depth at the center position, Harrell wasn’t anticipated to have extensive playing time. The majority of minutes will be taken by reigning MVP Joel Embiid, with reserves Paul Reed and Mo Bamba also getting opportunities to play.

Retaining Harrell on the team is a logical move for the Sixers because they can utilize his contract as a valuable trade asset.

Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 240 pounds, Harrell recorded averages of 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds in the recent season, marking his lowest since his rookie year with the Houston Rockets in 2015-16 when he managed 3.6 points and 1.7 rebounds.

During training camp, Harrell ranked third in the center depth chart, trailing behind Embiid and Reed. At the beginning of the season, he and Reed shared the backup role for Embiid, with one holding the position until the other encountered difficulties, leading to replacements.

This offseason, the Sixers re-signed Reed and added Bamba and another center, Filip Petrušev, to their roster.
