The Minnesota Timberwolves are set to release wing shooter Matt Ryan and are signing Daishen Nix to a two-way contract, according to Shams Charania of the Athletic.
In the preseason, Nix averaged 6 points and 3.3 assists, while Ryan showcased his scoring prowess with 18 points, including six three-pointers in the final two games.
Ryan, 26, appeared in 22 games for the Wolves last season, delivering 3.4 points with shooting percentages of 42.4% from the field, 38.8% from beyond the arc, and 85.7% from the free-throw line.
He also contributed 0.5 assists and 0.5 rebounds in about 8.2 minutes per game. Additionally, he featured in seven games for the Iowa Wolves, starting in six, where he averaged 19.0 points, 4.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 0.7 steals, and 0.4 blocks over 36.3 minutes per contest, with shooting splits of 35.3%, 35.2%, and 92.3%.
Daishen Nix, after spending his first two NBA seasons with the Houston Rockets, is embarking on a new journey by joining the Timberwolves for the upcoming season.
Despite going undrafted in the 2021 NBA draft, Nix showcased resilience by participating in the 2021 NBA Summer League with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Following that, he had an opportunity with the Houston Rockets, where he played in 81 games over two seasons.
As a point guard, he averaged 3.7 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. In the 2022-23 season, his field goal percentage stood at 34.2%.
The addition of Daishen Nix to the Timberwolves’ roster holds promise for both the player and the team.
Nix will be one of Minnesota’s two-way players, alongside Luka Garza and Jaylen Clark. In the meantime, if Matt Ryan clears waivers without any claims, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
