Trade Proposal Sends Norman Powell Back to Raptors, Kelly Olynyk to Clippers

Bleacher Report’s Glenn Hughes has proposed that the Raptors ‘run it back’ and trade for Norman Powell, who was part of their championship-winning team five years ago, from the Los Angeles Clippers this summer in exchange for Kelly Olynyk.

Olynyk recently joined the Raptors from the Utah Jazz at the trade deadline and has since been signed to a two-year, $26.25 million contract extension.

Hughes argues that this trade could benefit both teams. For Toronto, acquiring Powell could serve as a potential replacement for Gary Trent Jr. if he decides to leave this summer.

According to Hughes, “Though Powell’s scoring and recent award-worthy season may suggest L.A. is losing out in the overall talent department with this deal, Olynyk has been the more productive player in recent seasons.”

He further explains, “If the Clippers ultimately need to give Paul George his full four-year max to keep the Philadelphia 76ers from poaching him, the savings here could go a long way. Remember, it’s not just the $6.4 million difference between Powell’s and Olynyk’s salaries they’re trimming; it’s also the tax penalties that, depending on how far over the tax L.A. winds up being, can add an extra $4-5 per dollar spent.”

From the Clippers’ perspective, Olynyk could provide a different skillset as a spacing big, especially with most other centers besides Ivica Zubac being free agents.

Powell, who was a Sixth Man of the Year finalist this past season, could seamlessly replace the scoring brought by Trent Jr. However, given the recent extension on Olynyk’s contract, it might not be in the Raptors’ best interest to part with him.

The Clippers, facing financial constraints with big contracts like Kawhi Leonard’s new deal and upcoming decisions on Paul George and James Harden, may find this trade proposal compelling as they navigate their offseason decisions.

The Raptors missed the playoffs this season, while the Clippers were eliminated in the first round in a six-game series against the Mavericks.
