Pelicans Targeting Darius Garland or Dejounte Murray in Trade Talks This Summer

The Pelicans are reportedly aiming to upgrade their guard rotation by trading for a point guard according to Christian Clark of Nola.com. They are expected to resume trade discussions with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which began before the trade deadline.

The Pelicans are specifically targeting Darius Garland. Reports indicate that Garland might seek a trade from the Cavaliers if the team extends Donovan Mitchell.

A likely trade offer from New Orleans would include Brandon Ingram and his $36 million expiring contract. Garland has four years and $163.2 million left on his contract, fully guaranteed, with $36.7 million due in 2024-25.

Additionally, the Pelicans are reportedly more interested in the Hawks’ Dejounte Murray than Trae Young for a potential trade this summer,Clark noted.

“If the Pelicans reengage the Hawks, they could look to acquire Murray or Young. Although Young is the more talented player, the Pelicans seem to favor Murray, league sources said. The 6-foot-5 Murray is less of a defensive liability than the 6-foot-1 Young and has a cheaper contract; Murray will make $25.5 million next season, while Young is owed $43 million.”

The Pelicans were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder. They are willing to bring in impactful players to build around Zion Williamson and aim for a championship next season.
